Muthanna Al Kurtaas was trained in Germany with Sea Time on Hansa Line ships and in Japan as Docking Master. He joined the Arab Maritime Petroleum Transport Company as training superintendent. He also became Director of Operation and Development and Director General for the Saudi Sea Ports Authority in both industrial ports in Jubail and Yanbu.

After his retirement, he established Al Nitak for Maritime Studies consultancy.
